Wood shakes and wood shingles are commonly used roofing materials that provide long lasting weather protection. They are typically made from western cedar logs and are reshaped by the manufacturers. Wood shingles are sawn and have a flat and smooth surface offering a more tailored look whereas the wood shakes are split to form a thicker and irregular shape giving a more rugged form. The variance of color, thickness, and cut of the wood shakes and shingles creates a natural rustic appearance. These wood roofing products are energy efficient, as they have a high insulation value and provide ventilation to the home which can lower energy costs for heating and cooling.
The wood shingles and shakes come in three lengths; 16", 18", and 24" and are available in many shapes. Several of the manufacturers’ offer a variety of treatments including wood preservative treatments, pre stained shakes/shingles, and fire retardant pressure treatments giving a measurable degree of fire protection, as these wood products are susceptible to fire damage.
